The writer of an article in the current Books and Culture magazine ponders what Name to use in talking to God, when she prays. What Name do you most frequently use? Obviously there are several available: Father, Jesus, Lord, God are probably most popular. Her theory is that the name we use most reflects more about ourselves then it does about God. I think the name reveals the dominant way we image God in our minds and our belief about who He is.
She says, she most often addresses God as “Lord”, when she prays to Him. I usually open my prayer with “Almighty God, Heavenly Father” I guess I am most influenced by Jesus, who taught us to pray, saying, “Our Father”. But, what do we mean by “Father“? For many, that is not the most positive name; but, it can have many negative, as well as positive associations. I see the Person to whom I pray, first of all, as God- the God who is all mighty, omnipotent. Thus, He is Creator and Judge of all; but, I am thankful, that, through Jesus my Lord and because of Jesus my Savior, I see and know this almighty God as my Father- not just any father or a faulty father or a human, earthly father who is almighty. Rather, I see the Almighty God (Creator and Judge) as my Father who is in Heaven. Yes, when I pray, my hearts and words go to “Almighty God, Heavenly Father“. My next words are, “Thank you for your mercy and grace.“ And, gracefully, mercifully, He hears me. What Name do you most frequently use?
